▹ ▹VISION SYSTEMS: TECHNOLOGY PROJECT FEASIBILITY VISION SYSTEMS 1.3.2 Supplier considerations In the past, vision solutions were mainly realised by specialised, highly qualified system integrators. However over time, imaging has established itself as an industrial standard technology and the market now offers systems that allow users to solve simple tasks by themselves, of course following prior consulting. We are ready to support you whether or not you are able to solve your task based on our technology, or advise you as to which system integrator would be best suited for your application. No matter which solution you might choose, our specialists are there to support you. seminars which include sample evaluation workshops. These events run regularly throughout the year, please check our website for dates or call us for advice. 1.3.3 In-house deployment The advantage of deploying a vision system using in-house resources is that you retain control over the system and you will be able to maintain and enhance the functionality when necessary. To support customers that wish to adopt this approach, we offer a number of services. 1.3.1 Defining your requirements A successful vision application usually begins with a clearly defined set of goals that have been established prior to installation and testing. If additional requirements are added, or requirements are changed as the project progresses, this could have a major influence on the success of the project. Adding functionality may require an increase in cycle time, or force the selection of a more powerful vision system. Defining a list of all current and potential requirements in advance will enable you to make an informed and future oriented choice which may help to reduce the risk of a poor system selection. It is good practice to ensure there is spare processing capacity as its common for the application requirements to grow once the integration phase of the project is underway. The following points should be considered prior to specifying and deploying a vision system: ■■ How many inspections are required per second? ■■ How fast are the parts moving? ■■ How large is the area of inspection? ■■ What level of accuracy is required? ■■ Do you need multiple views? ■■ Is colour identification needed? ■■ What actions do you wish to take based on the inspection results? Special consideration should be given to a realistic definition of the required accuracy, as this has a massive influence on system cost. ■■ Sample evaluation and feasibility services ■■ Training on-site or at our training centre ■■ Configuration advice ■■ On-site consulting via certified engineers This approach has the benefit of building in-house knowledge that can support and evolve the system, as well as help in the deployment of future systems, with minimal investment. 1.3.4 Turnkey solutions For more complex applications or for situations with insufficient internal resources, we recommend a bespoke vision system that is developed, installed and maintained by a specialist integrator. If you choose to deliver your application with the help of a system integrator, we maintain an involvement in the ongoing project, providing advice and training for customers who wish to gain a higher level of system knowledge for maintenance and diagnostic purposes. 1.4 Types of vision systems There are many kinds of vision systems on the market, including smart cameras, compact vision systems and PC based systems. These products offer an intuitive user interface that can be understood easily with training. For configuration of the inspection task a separate computer (i.e. a laptop) is required that will be connected to the smart camera via a network interface, however, during runtime no connection to this computer is necessary. Accessories such as expanded I/O, display units or extended interface modules are also available. Of course it is possible to use multiple smart cameras in one application to solve more complex tasks, but as the major advantage of smart cameras is the compact, highly integrated design and the easy communication of results, the main focus of using these products should be on appli cations where all results can be extracted from the camera image with minimum computing effort and communicated to the system directly. You may also hear the term smart sensor. These are very similar to smart cameras, but include the optics and illumi nation in a pre-calibrated unit and often have less features. 1.4.2 Compact vision systems Compact vision systems are based on embedded processing technology and combine the processor, industrial communication interfaces and support for multiple cameras in a robust, compact industrial housing. These systems offer optimised heat dissipation and enable the use of fast processors at maximum performance, allowing the simultaneous operation of multiple cameras. Compact vision systems generally include an inbuilt graphical user interface that can be operated directly with a touch screen monitor or mouse and keyboard. Live images and results can be displayed on a monitor connected directly to the system. selected components. Modern cameras produce high data rates and demanding software solutions require immense computing power. Due to the extreme loads it is essential that absolute compatibility is achieved to ensure a successful solution. Sourcing all the components separately increases risk and can take significant time. Bespoke PC based vision systems can be configured from our vast range of vision components. Our range of PC systems platforms can be found in the vision computers chapter. For standard applications compact systems or intelligent cameras are often the better choice, due to reduced complexity, lower cost and proven compatibility. 1.5 Configuration and programming Many system integrators and advanced vision system developers value the flexibility and openness of PC vision systems and develop their individual software solutions using imaging libraries and high level programming languages. More information about this approach is to be found in the software section. Automation engineers familiar with PLC type scripting often choose systems that can be easily configured via a graphical user interface (GUI) and can be deployed without requiring in-depth programming know-how. Using this method, individual tools can simply be positioned on the image using the computer mouse and can then be configured in a way that they exactly find the features that need to be recognised. These users therefore mostly select intelligent cameras or compact systems. The following section covers different configuration possibilities for compact vision systems and smart cameras. 1.5.1 Local configuration Some vision systems provide screen, keyboard and mouse inputs that enable the vision system to be programmed in-situ. This means that no PC is required for control and set-up of the unit.
